Home » Golf-Unnatural Addiction or Healthy Recreation?

Golf has long been the point of debate among players and critics alike as to whether or not it is a healthy recreation or an unnatural addiction. While it is true that some individuals play golf more than they actually work at their jobs, it is also true that many people see it just as a recreational pastime and spend very little time playing in comparison with other activities. In the case of those who spend every waking moment on the golf course, these are people that are very likely to be good players and have a chance at actually playing in some type of tournament and making money at the sport. While this sounds somewhat unlikely for some, there are those who are just extremely skilled at the sport and only through constant practice will they get any better. On the other hand, there are those who play nonstop and aren’t very good at all. Who among us has the right to tell them that they should stop playing? This individual might believe that if they continue to play that they will improve and eventually play professionally. Or they might just simply enjoy the game that much. While it is true that golf is technically a recreational activity, it is also true that it develops skills and can actually lead to a paying job, that is, paying for a winning performance. Providing that you actually win.

Under the category of unnatural addiction, there are those who play constantly and simply aren’t any good and still can’t stop playing. This is certainly considered to be unnatural by some. Mainly those who don’t play golf. Without ever having played the game or ever enjoying the experience on the golf course, it is hard for anyone to critique another player for their obsession. In fact, it would be considered extraordinarily rude for an individual to comment upon your habits and your abilities on the links.

Of course, there is that special someone that has the right to say all manner of critical things about you and your performance on the golf course. In the case of one’s spouse, there is little that you can do other than to grin and bear it. In most cases, it is a good idea to limit your golfing activities in order to spend time with your spouse. If you find that you are spending more time on the golf course than you are at home, marital problems will most certainly ensue at some point. While golf is certainly a phenomenal game, it should not take the place of relationships with people in your life. These types of relationships are difficult to build and require only moments to destroy. By spending all your time on the golf course, you can leave these individuals feeling as if you care more for the game of golf than you do for them. While golf might be addicting, make sure that you take the time to spend some time with your loved ones and let them know that they are the most important thing in your life, even if they aren’t.

Naturally, the line between unnatural addiction and healthy recreation is somewhat vague and blurry. As long as you take the time to enjoy the real world outside of golf, whether it’s a videogame or, in the real world, the golf course, you shouldn’t have any problems enjoying your favorite game.
